New project launched: "Mitanand"

The joint project "Mitanand" was launched on 1 April 2023 by the Technical University of Munich, ride2go GmbH, goFLUX Mobility GmbH and MVV GmbH. The aim of this project is to improve the MVV's mobility services by better linking local public transport (ÖPNV) with offers from people who provide ride-sharing services. The project is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport as part of the mFUND innovation initiative with a total of around 200,000 euros.

The changes in mobility needs, growing interest in climate protection and sustainability, and advancing digitization are leading to a higher demand for improved routing, information, and bookability of mobility options. For this reason, the Technical University of Munich, ride2go GmbH, goFLUX Mobility GmbH, and Münchner Verkehrs- und Tarifverbund GmbH have joined forces in the "Mitanand" project (meaning "together" in bavarian German) to meet the challenge of better integrating carpooling options with public transport and other mobility options.

Carpooling options are a useful addition to traditional public transport, especially for sparsely populated areas. However, carpooling portals have so far mainly focused on long distances or the mobility of employees of companies. There are few sustainable and successful solutions for commuter, everyday, and leisure mobility in local or regional contexts that are also integrated into the public transport system.

As part of the "Mitanand" project, it is planned to integrate a tool for forming carpools into the mobility platform of the MVV for the Munich metropolitan area. This is intended to enable intermodal routing of carpooling options and public transport. In addition, a common data format is to be developed that is usable and open to all parties. The specific applications are to serve as a basis for a transferable concept that creates the prerequisites for integration into the MVV tariff as well as deep integration of carpooling options into the Munich public transport network.
