MCube: Test Intersection for urban automated and connected driving

Project Description

The aim of the project is to develop and implement a permanent test bed for connected and automated driving (separate and non-StVO-bound), consisting of a test intersection including the required intersection-side infrastructure (associated partner Siemens) such as traffic areas, traffic lights (LSA), sensors and V2X communication infrastructure, on which various experiments on automated driving are carried out, especially in interaction with vulnerable road users (VRU), such as cyclists and pedestrians.

The test intersection serves to test, validate and certify connected and automated vehicles (CAV) in a secure environment (together with the associated partner TÜV Süd) before the developed vehicle control algorithms are evaluated and further tested in real road traffic. TUM’s CAV and existing CAVs from the project partners Augsburg University of Applied Sciences (HSA) and EasyMile are used here. Particular emphasis is placed on networking, communication and interaction with the transport infrastructure and the VRU.

Through numerous interfaces to other projects, the test intersection enables strong networking and integration within M Cube and will also become a funding platform for networked interdisciplinary research at TUM, which builds on the experiences of existing intersections such as the Digital Node 4.0 Braunschweig or the Intelligent Node in the research project TEMPUS (connection via associated partner Landeshauptstadt München (LHM)).

Tasks of the Chair

  • Establishment of the technical and operational deployability of the test bed
  • Operation and maintenance of the test bed
  • Consulting and networking of the involved project partners with the aim generating synergy effects
  • Design of the experiments to be performed at the test bed (X2X-Communication, CAV-VRU-Interaction, etc.)
  • Evaluation of the test data
