The use of autonomous vehicles is already possible today under certain conditions. However, complex situations, such as construction site areas, are still difficult for autonomous vehicles to master. If the vehicle cannot handle the driving situation on its own, the assistance of a human operator is requested to support the driving situation from an external workstation. Accordingly, teleoperated driving enables completely driverless operation, whereby one operator can supervise several vehicles worldwide.

Functionality

In teleoperation, vehicle sensors detect the vehicle environment. The sensor data is then transmitted via mobile network to a control room where the operator workplace is located. The operator views the received data (e.g., videos, LIDAR point clouds, object lists), captures the vehicle environment, and finds a proposed solution that is transmitted back to the vehicle. The vehicle takes over the suggestion, solves the scenario and returns to autonomous vehicle mode.

Research areas

The Teleoperated Driving team deals with safety concepts for interference-free data transmission, functional safety and legal protection of Teleoperated Driving. In addition, research is being conducted into visualization concepts for the appropriate presentation of information and interaction with the operator (HMI). In order to optimally adapt the operator's intervention to different scenarios, various control concepts are being developed and evaluated. The goal is to advance autonomous mobility and make traffic scenarios of any complexity manageable. To this end, the team has set up various test vehicles, including a teleoperated real vehicle and several operator workstations.

We publish the results generated in the course of numerous research projects at various conferences and in journals. In addition, our software is made available open source in the TUM Github Repository  to continuously expand the state of the art worldwide.

The transferability of research results to industry plays a central role in our team. With the foundation of the startup Fernride, that has its roots in our team, this practical relevance is lived.
