We invite researchers and students from all over the world to join our group at TUM and work with us on the challenges of developing autonomous systems. Our doors are open to anyone who is passionate and committed to taking the next step in their scientific career and interested in developing the next generation of autonomous vehicles. We offer the possibility of a stay of several months.
We would like to explicitly state that applicants must arrange their own funding for the stay. For those who need financial support for their research stay, there are numerous options, e.g. through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). We are looking forward to your applications!

1. How can I apply?
Applications should be submitted only to the AVS application email listed in the job announcement.
2. What materials are needed for my application?

3. Are there any formal requirements for international applicants?
International applicants are very welcome. Please ensure that your degree qualifications meet TUM’s admission requirements for employment or thesis supervision (A masters degress is necessary) If you are applying for a research assistant position, a valid German work permit or student visa is required.
4. How are applicants selected?
Applications are reviewed by the supervising research group. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an interview (in person or online). Selection is based on academic performance, relevant technical skills, motivation, and research interests.
5. When should I apply?
There are no fixed application deadlines unless stated in the specific posting.
6. What is the expected duration of positions or projects?
PhD positions: Usually 3–4 years, depending on project funding and research progress.
7. Is funding available?
PhD and postdoctoral positions are typically funded through third-party projects or TUM staff positions, following the public sector pay scale (TV-L).
8. Is proficiency in German required?
For most research activities, English proficiency is sufficient. However, a basic understanding of German is beneficial for daily communication and administrative processes.
9. How does supervision work?
Each student or researcher is assigned a supervisor from the AVS research staff. Regular meetings are held to discuss progress, results, and further steps. Independent work and initiative are highly valued. Prof Betz is the doctoral father for the PhD thesis.
10. Where is the AVS Lab located?
The AVS Lab is part of the TUM School of Engineering and Design and is located on the TUM Campus Garching, near Munich.
