TUM is currently home to 52.000 students in 178 different degree programs, 643 professors, and 11.804 employees at 7 international locations. By hosting 7 Schools and Faculties, TUM elaborated 10.413 publications, 1.141 promotions, and 78 start-ups in 2022 (TUM, 2023a).

Besides, TUM is the only technical university continuously marked as an excellence university since 2006. By following its excellence strategy (called TUM Agenda 2030), the university aims to foster gender and diversity-oriented talent management, future-oriented vitalization of German engineering, dynamization of scientific interactivity, mobilization of the international network, renewal of governance and administrative structures, and responsibility in all dimensions of action: Sustainability and resilience (TUM, 2023).

TUM School of Engineering and Design

TUM fosters and stands for cutting-edge research, also in the field of engineeering and design. Within the several departments at the TUM School of Engineering and Design, different chairs and institutes aims to explore mobility and transportation innovations, challenges and opportunities, focusing on its connection with urban space. This plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable urban mobility.

The Department of Mobility Systems Engineering engages in research and education across various facets of mobility, with a focus on transport infrastructure planning, traffic control, integrated land use and transport planning, travel patterns, and modelling. Representatives of the TUM Department of Mobility Systems Engineering will be present at the mobil.TUM 2024: The Future of Mobility and Urban Space!

Chair of Urban Structure and Transport Planning

The Chair of Urban Structure and Transport Planning, your organizing host of mobil.TUM 2024, engages in teaching, research, and practical applications aimed at comprehending the drivers influencing individual mobility behavior, integrating land use and transportation strategies across varied spatial scales in metropolitan areas. Three research group and one overlapping working group as well as a general focus on system analysis and evaluation is elaborating research in different fields of urban structure and transport planning. These groups are:

  • TUM Accessibility Planning, led by Benjamin Büttner, aims to merge land-use and transport planning using the proven concept of accessibility, enhancing city life quality and sustainability. Its tools fuel interdisciplinary discussions among stakeholders, decision-makers, and citizens, fostering collaborative dialogue.
  • Led by Julia Kinigadner, the research group Integrated Mobility Concepts concentrates on formulating holistic mobility strategies, implementing inventive solutions, designing sustainable public spaces, and developing methodologies for cohesive planning, all while evaluating the effects of varied mobility options.
  • The research group Mobility Justice, managed by David Duran, seeks to raise awareness and rectify injustices within mobility systems. Its primary approach integrates mixed methods, combining spatial analysis and machine learning with qualitative techniques to comprehensively identify and address these disparities.
  • The working group Governance lies across all research groups and supports projects in measure implementation with regard to governance processes and stakeholder management. It forms the pravital interface between science, economy and society. Head of the working group is Carolin Zimmer.

  1. Placemaking to integrate urban space and mobility
  2. Promotting sustainable mobility choices in metropolitan regions
  3. Governing responsible mobility innovations
  4. Shaping the transition towards mobility justice
  5. System analysis, design and evaluation
