The focus was on how the Olympics could serve as a catalyst for long-term, socially and environmentally sustainable urban development – going far beyond the sporting event itself.
In his contribution, Prof. Gebhard Wulfhorst emphasised that the Games can only create lasting value for Munich if they are used to tackle existing challenges in a holistic way – for example in public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure, or in creating new spaces for leisure and social interaction. Infrastructure projects that are already needed today could be accelerated through the Olympics.
The discussion made one thing clear: How can the Games be shaped as a project for and with the city’s residents? The Speaker Series showed that a nuanced examination of the benefits and costs of hosting the Olympics is not only desirable, but essential – and that it requires broad public and expert debate. We are pleased to be part of this important exchange and look forward to the ideas, perspectives, and debates it will continue to inspire.
