CENTAURO (completed: 2019)

Connected Environments for Negotiated Traffic Control and Urban Optimization

Project Description

The Internet of Things (IoT) enters more and more areas of technological disciplines and opens new possibilities for sharing data and information within fully connected environments. This holds true also for transportation systems with highly connected system architectures, especially in the context of Urban Traffic Control (UTC), where connected environments include for instance Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I), Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication, Floating Vehicle Data (FVD) and any other shared digital information on traffic participants. The goal of Centauro is to develop and test a robust methodology that allows for optimal traffic state estimation by including all possible future available information stemming from the emerging connected environments in urban areas. The enhanced traffic state estimation will then be integrated in an existing UTC system aiming at control decisions with higher precision and flexibility while reducing stationary detection efforts.
