Abstract

Vegetable oils offer an alternative to fossil fuels used in compression ignition engines.

To ensure proper engine operation, requirements are made on the quality and properties of vegetable oil fuel. While many of the requirements have already been specified in national standards, the evaluation of the ignition quality of vegetable oil fuel is open. Therefore, the ignition behavior of vegetable oils is analyzed in a constant volume combustion chamber. Fur-ther, a method is defined to evaluate the ignition quality of vegetable oils in direct comparison to the primary reference fuels of the cetane number scale. The relationships between the fat-ty acid composition of a vegetable oil, the boundary conditions under which the self-ignition process takes place and the ignition quality are also shown. Finally, the ignition quality deter-mined make it possible to characterize vegetable oils for use as fuel.
