Digital Twin Munich (DZ-M)

Project Description

The Chair of Traffic Engineering and Control has been awarded the contract for the scientific support of the City of Munich in the creation of the city's digital twin.

The digital twin Munich will be developed within the framework of the project "Digital Twin Munich" funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and the project "Connected Urban Twins (CUT)" funded by the Federal Ministry of the Interior. The scientific support of the City of Munich (especially the GeodataService) is carried out in cooperation with the Chair of Geoinformatics. The goal is, among other things, the development of new, innovative use cases for urban development as well as citizen-oriented forms of participation.

Digital urban twins of the built environment are becoming increasingly important in the context of smart city projects, among others. Digital models can complement the real, physical world. These thus enable a wide variety of simulations (e.g., traffic simulation or solar potential analysis) to be carried out, key figures to be derived, and the city to be monitored over the entire life cycle of buildings and other urban objects.

Furthermore, the digital twin can also be "cloned" (becoming a digital triplet) and then used for "what if...scenarios". Thus, effects of measures can be tested virtually before they are implemented.

The Chair of Traffic Engineering and Control provides the input for the transfer of geospatial data in simulation networks with different requirements and use cases.

Tasks of the Chair

  • Traffic data collection, traffic modeling, traffic simulation.
  • Enabling interfaces between traffic flow simulation and 3D visualization on different spatial scales.
  • Implementing selected scenarios in Munich as demonstrators.
