openMAPPING Party

Within the openLAB Urban Mobility, the Chair of Urban Structure and Transport Planning organizes mapping parties to actively improve the quality of OpenStreetMap (OSM). OSM is the most prominent example of an open source database collected through crowdsourcing and is used by many planners, students and interested people worldwide.

We invited everyone interested to come to our openMAPPING parties to map together.

What is a Mapping Party?

The idea of a mapping party is to get together to do some mapping (entering and updating data in OpenStreetMap), socialising and chating: "It is a convivial community event, open to all, and although some folks will be mapping experts, newcomers are always welcome. It's a great way to find out more about the project, and if you've never gathered map data for OpenStreetMap before, it's a great way to learn how. Some mapping parties are very specifically targeted as a training event for new mappers." - OpenStreetMap Wiki

Our latest event took place in the end of 2022. We will inform you here on the website and via our Social Media Channels when the next Mapping Party will take place.

Mapping Party Christmas Edition

When?  Thursday, 08 December 2022, 2:30 - 5:00 pm

Where? Westerhamer Str. 14, 81671 München (MAGs Nachbarschaftstreff Westerhamer Straße)

We invite all interested people to map with us. As Christmas is just around the corner, we will offer typical German Christmas biscuits and invite all participants to join us at the Christmas market in the Werksviertel. Come by, map, and meet new people!

Which area will be mapped?
This time (previous event on 08.12.2022), we will focus on the neighbourhood "Berg am Laim" and mainly map the area around Piusplatz.

For what is the data used?
The data will be uploaded into Openstreetmap, where it is available for the public. The updated OSM data will be used as the basis for work in the MGeM research project, a project within the MCube Cluster.

Who can participate?
The event is open to all. It does not matter if you are an expert in the field of OSM or a newcomer. In the beginning of the event we will give a short introduction into the topic and the used software. If you are intrested, come by!

In which language will the event be held?
The event will be held in English.

What should I bring?
It would be great if you can bring your smartphone and install the smartphone application Every Door (available for Android and iOS). Who the application works will be explanied in the beginning of the event. The mapping takes place outdoors in the neighbourhood Berg am Laim. As it is December, please make sure to bring a warm jacket. We will provide a room before and after the mapping that can be used for warming up and for the bathroom.

What does "Christmas Edition" mean?
As it is December by this time, we want to get into christmas spirit. Before and after the mapping, we will serve typical German christmas pastires. Additionally, we invited all participants to join us to the christmas market "zauberhafter weihnachtsmarkt" in the Werksviertel after the mapping is done (on a voluntray base).

When and where is it?
The Mapping Party Christmas Edition will take place on Thursday, 08 December 2022, 2.30 - 5 pm, in the MAGs Nachbarschaftstreff Westerhamer Straße (Westerhamer Str. 14, 81671 München, OpenStreetMap).
