In the winterterm 2017/2018 the Institute of Automotive Technology offers once again the possibility for students to work on international projects. In cooperation with international partners the students write their thesis on exciting topics in the field of mobility.

Fusion of high-accurate map data in the automotive industry
In this year’s globalDrive project, students from the Aalto University in Finland and the TUM, in cooperation with the Agency for Digitisation, High-Speed Internet and Surveying, have got the task to develop innovative concepts regarding to the topic „New possibilities through fusion of high-accurate map data in the automotive industry“.
Leading contributors in the automotive sector agree that the most reliable sensor for automated and autonomous driving is not a sensor in the conventional sense. The most intelligent sensor is a highly-detailed map.
As a team, consisting of mechanical and automotive engineers as well as geodesists, they shall analyze the data requirements of the automotive industry and the characteristics of a mobile environment with its time-sensitive tasks, to identify reusable or missing components in the administrative data sets. They shall find possibilities to enrich the original map data, for example with voluntarily collected information, such as OpenStreetMap, Points of Interests or georeferenced events in social media.

Intelligent travel features in future public transport
As part of the globalDrive project, in cooperation with TUMCreate Singapore, students of the Department of Automotive Engineering and students of the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore will work on the topic "Intelligent travel features in future public transport".
The starting point of this project is the concept development of novel transport systems for large cities, such as Singapore, whose population is increasing rapidly. TUMCreate has prepared a preliminary work on this issue and is working on the development of a "Semi Rapid Transport System (SRT)", as it could be used from 2030 onwards. The goal is to solve the problems electrification, travel comfort improvement and dealing with increased traffic in the future. The participants of the globalDrive project will deal with the last two questions. In order to increase comfort and efficiency compared to today's transport systems, new concepts for smart travel features will be investigated and developed. Possible topics are efficient and user-friendly entry and exit concepts for people of all ages. Options for ticket cancellation and personalization of the travel destination (infotainment, air conditioning) will also be considered. Project partners:

„Pimp my Twizy“ – Improvement of Power and Range of an Electric Vehicle using an Optimized Thermal Management System
This year, in cooperation with MAHLE International GmbH, an international project with many possibilities to gain experiences with thermal management systems is offered. In addition to the thermal management the control of a complete electric drivetrain of a production car (Renault Twizy) is part of the project.
To unleash the maximum power of the existing components, the temperatures of the electric machine, the power electronics, the charger and the battery must be kept within certain limits by a suitable thermal management system. These limits depend on the operational and environmental conditions. The changing conditions require these components to be cooled or heated accordingly. Especially drivetrains with a high power output, resulting in correspondingly high excess heat generation, lead to elaborate and therefore increasingly complex and expensive thermal management systems. To avoid the necessity of those systems the power of the drivetrain will often be limited for affordable cars. The goal of this globalDrive project is to find possible solutions to avoid these restrictions, developing a system with sufficient cooling power to improve the components performance that is not as complex as existing systems. The system should be suitable for changing environmental conditions, allowing to achieve optimal performance in everyday use.
Within this project new innovative concepts for the thermal management system for the components of the electric drivetrain should be developed. As a result, an analysis of the individual components and the interactions between them is necessary. The effectiveness of the developed solution should be demonstrated on a Renault Twizy that is provided by the project partner. The modified prototype should exceed the stock Twizy at all relevant parameters like peak and continuous power, acceleration, maximum velocity, range and charging power. This can be achieved by the developed thermal management system and adaptions of the control units of the car.
