Despite the basic functionalities which should be accomplished effective and efficient in modern vehicles, plenty additional functionalities in the domains safety, comfort, communication and information are expected nowadays. The lecture shows, how this wide range of tasks are implemented in state of the art vehicles. An overview will be provided of the process chains in vehicles, which interactively connect electric- / electronic-systems with human, environment and surrounding areas to a complex network. The main objectives are: - Functional layout and electric, electromagnetic, mechanic and thermic properties of system components and systems - Necessary conditions for fault-free operation - Coordinated approach for the phases of concept, design and testing - Maintainability and diagnostics in faulty conditions The focus lies on physical operating principles of the components and the functional behavior of the subsystems in the cooperative system human – vehicle – environment – surrounding
